How to Set Up Shopify Abandoned Cart Automation (Step by Step)

Set up Shopify abandoned cart automation: timing for a 3-step series, what each email should say, exit rules, testing, and how to track recovered revenue.

An abandoned cart automation sends reminders to shoppers who started checkout and left. Set it up once and it runs every day. This guide covers the timing, the content, the rules that stop it at the right moment, and how to measure it.

Recover abandoned carts on Shopify, starting free

EmailSync starts you with a 3-step cart recovery template you can fully edit in its flow builder. Each email shows the shopper's real cart, it stops when they buy, and you see the revenue each email brought back.

Step 1: Pick your trigger

Shopify records an abandoned checkout when a shopper enters their email at checkout and does not complete the order. That is the event your automation should start from. Shopify's help center explains how abandoned checkouts are recorded (linked below).

Step 2: Set the timing

A three-email series is a solid default:

  1. About 1 hour after: a short reminder with the cart.
  2. About 1 day after: answer the main objection (shipping, returns, sizing).
  3. About 3 days after: final reminder, with an incentive only if your margins allow it.

Our abandoned cart discount strategy covers when a discount helps and when it trains shoppers to wait.

Step 3: Write the emails

Each email needs the cart block (image, product name, variant, price) and one clear button back to checkout. Copy you can use is in our Shopify abandoned cart email templates.

Step 4: Add exit rules

The series must stop the moment the shopper places an order. Otherwise buyers get reminders for something they already bought. That annoys customers and can hurt your sender reputation.

Step 5: Protect deliverability

Send from your own domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC set up. See recovery email deliverability for the checklist.

Step 6: Test and measure

A/B test one thing at a time, such as subject line or send time, and keep the winner. Measure recovered revenue from actual paid orders, not just clicks.

Doing it in EmailSync

EmailSync, our Shopify app, handles steps 1 to 4 in one click:

  • The 3-step series at 1 hour, 1 day and 3 days is created for you as a template.
  • You can change it however you want in the flow builder: move the timing, add or remove emails, add if/then conditions, branch on opens or clicks, add tags, or attach a discount code.
  • Each email shows that shopper's actual cart items.
  • The series stops as soon as they buy.
  • You edit the copy in the visual builder and can A/B test any email.
  • Every paid Shopify order is matched to the email that drove it, so you see recovered revenue per email.

Connect your sending domain in settings for step 5.

Plan Price per month Paid orders per month Emails included
Free $0 Up to 100 1,000 (hard cap)

On paid plans, emails past the included amount cost $1.75 per 1,000. There is no contact limit on any plan, so you are not charged for the size of your list.
