Checkout Upsells vs Email Upsells on Whop: When to Use Each

Order bumps and one-click upsells at checkout, or offers by email days later? How each works on Whop and how to use both without annoying buyers.

There are two good moments to sell more to someone who just bought from you. The first is during checkout, when their card is out and they have decided to buy. The second is later, by email, once they have used what they bought and trust you more. They work differently, suit different offers, and work best together.

Checkout upsells

A checkout upsell appears while the purchase is happening. On Whop there are a few kinds:

  • Order bump: a checkbox on the checkout page that adds a small extra item, like a template pack or a bonus call. One tick, no extra form.
  • One-click upsell: an offer shown right after payment that the buyer can accept without typing card details again, because the charge goes to the same payment method.
  • Downsell: a cheaper alternative shown if they decline the upsell.

Whop also has native upsells for locked apps, shown before checkout, after checkout or inside the whop.

Strengths: high intent, no extra steps, and the offer is seen by every buyer.

Limits: you only get one moment, and the buyer knows little about you yet. Big-ticket offers rarely work here.

Best offers: cheap, closely related add-ons that make the main purchase better. Price them well below the main item.

Our sister product OneClick Upsell adds order bumps, one-click upsells and downsells to Whop checkout. For the setup, see how to add one-click upsells on Whop.

Email upsells

An email upsell arrives days or weeks later. It can be timed to what the buyer has done, such as finishing a course, renewing twice or being about to cancel.

Strengths: you can wait until they have had a win, explain the offer properly, and target based on their plan and behavior.

Limits: fewer people see it, and every extra click between email and payment loses buyers.

Best offers: upgrades to a higher tier, annual plans, coaching, and anything that needs more explanation.

The click problem is shrinking. With WhopMail's in-email purchases, Gmail and Yahoo users can confirm a purchase right inside the email, and other inboxes get a one-tap checkout.

How to use both without annoying people

  1. Do not repeat the same offer. If someone declined the order bump, wait before emailing the same item, and frame it differently.
  2. Exclude buyers. Anyone who took the checkout upsell should not get the email pitch for it. A tool that reads Whop purchase events handles this automatically.
  3. Step up the price. Small add-on at checkout, bigger upgrade by email after a win.
  4. Measure per buyer. Track revenue per new buyer across 30 days, not each tactic alone.

A simple starting plan

  • One order bump at checkout priced at 10 to 30% of the main product.
  • One post-purchase upsell for a natural next step.
  • An email on day 7 offering the annual plan to monthly members.
  • An email after a milestone offering the higher tier.
