Klaviyo is the default email tool for a lot of Shopify stores, and for good reason. It has deep Shopify data, strong segmentation and SMS. The common complaint is cost: Klaviyo bills by active profiles, so your bill grows with your list even in months when sales are flat.
If that is why you are looking, here are four alternatives, what they cost at the start, and who each one suits. One of them is our own app, EmailSync. We say where it is weaker too.
Recover abandoned carts on Shopify, starting free
EmailSync starts you with a 3-step cart recovery template you can fully edit in its flow builder. Each email shows the shopper's real cart, it stops when they buy, and you see the revenue each email brought back.

| App | Free plan | How paid pricing scales | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Email | First 10,000 emails a month free | From $1 per 1,000 emails after that | Simple newsletters inside Shopify admin |
| Omnisend | 250 contacts, 500 emails a month | By contact count | Email plus SMS and push in one tool |
| Mailchimp | Under 250 contacts, up to 500 emails a month | By contact count | Stores that also sell outside Shopify |
| EmailSync | 100 paid orders and 1,000 emails a month | By paid orders and emails sent | Cart recovery and revenue tracking on a budget |
Prices and limits are from each company's own pricing page in October 2026. Check the sources below before you decide, since these change.
1. Shopify Email
Shopify's own app. Your first 10,000 emails each month are free, then pricing starts at $1 per 1,000 emails. It lives inside Shopify admin and pulls in your products and brand colors.
Good for: newsletters and promotions with no extra setup. Watch out for: fewer automation and segmentation options than a dedicated email platform. We compare it head to head in Shopify Email vs Klaviyo.

2. Omnisend
Omnisend's free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Standard lets you send up to 12 times your list size each month, and Pro is unlimited under a fair use policy. It includes pre-built cart abandonment, welcome and post-purchase workflows, plus SMS and web push.
Good for: stores that want email and SMS in one place. Watch out for: paid plans are priced by contacts, so a big list still costs more.
3. Mailchimp
Mailchimp is free under 250 contacts, but the free plan has no automation flows. Essentials allows flows of up to 4 steps and Standard allows up to 200 flows. Paid plans are priced by contacts.
Good for: businesses that already use Mailchimp for other channels. Watch out for: a real abandoned cart series needs a paid plan.
4. EmailSync
EmailSync is our Shopify app, the Shopify version of WhopMail. It has a visual flow builder. Flows can start from a Shopify event (customer created, order paid for a specific product, checkout abandoned, refund), a tag, a list, a form or a webhook, and you can add waits, if/then conditions, wait-for-open or click branches, and add or remove tags. The abandoned cart flow (1 hour, 1 day, 3 days, showing each shopper's actual cart items) is a template you can change however you like, with an optional auto-generated discount code. Welcome, order follow-up and post-purchase product recommendation templates are included. You can tag buyers of a product and send campaigns filtered by those tags. Every paid Shopify order is matched to the email that drove it. You can A/B test emails, send from your own domain, and let AI agents such as Claude or ChatGPT draft campaigns over MCP.
| Plan | Price per month | Paid orders per month | Emails included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Up to 100 | 1,000 (hard cap) |
| Starter (shown as Pro on the App Store) | $19.95 | Up to 500 | 25,000 |
| Growth | $49.95 | Up to 2,000 | 75,000 |
| Scale | $99.95 | Unlimited | 200,000 |
On paid plans, emails past the included amount cost $1.75 per 1,000. There is no contact limit on any plan, so you are not charged for the size of your list.
Good for: stores with large lists but modest order volume, because you pay by orders and emails, not contacts. Watch out for: EmailSync launched in October 2026 and has no reviews yet. It does not do SMS. It does not yet have predictive analytics such as predicted lifetime value or churn risk, so if you rely on those, Klaviyo is still stronger.
How to choose
- Mostly newsletters, small budget: Shopify Email.
- Email and SMS together: Omnisend or Klaviyo.
- Cart recovery and revenue tracking, big list, few orders: EmailSync.
Moving off Klaviyo? Set up the cart flow first, because it earns the most. Our Shopify abandoned cart automation guide walks through it, and free and cheaper Klaviyo alternatives covers the lowest cost options.
