PayPal Alternatives for Online Sellers (Without Losing Your PayPal Buyers)

Thinking about PayPal alternatives? Why sellers switch, what PayPal charges, how Whop still lets buyers pay with PayPal, and how to move your customer list and emails.

Sellers usually look for PayPal alternatives for one of three reasons: the fees, a frozen balance, or a business PayPal account they cannot open in their country. The catch is that buyers like PayPal. Drop it entirely and some of them leave at checkout.

So the better question is often not "what replaces PayPal" but "how do I stop depending on my own PayPal account while still letting buyers pay with it." This post covers that, plus the part most comparisons skip: keeping your customer list and emails when your payments move.

What PayPal charges

PayPal's US business fee page lists 3.49% plus a fixed fee for PayPal Checkout, Pay with Venmo and PayPal Guest Checkout. PayPal Pay Later is 4.99% plus a fixed fee. International payments add more. For a $49 product, that is roughly $2.20 before any currency fees.

The main alternatives

  • Stripe. 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards, plus a long list of local methods. You build or buy the store, member area and emails around it.
  • Shopify Payments. Built into Shopify, aimed at physical and digital stores on Shopify.
  • Whop. A full platform for selling digital products, memberships and communities. Whop processes the payment and also offers PayPal at checkout, so you can keep PayPal buyers without running your own PayPal integration.

If you want a deep comparison of checkout methods and fees, the OneClick Upsell team covers it in Whop payment methods explained.

Keeping PayPal as an option on Whop

Whop's Local Payment Methods page lists PayPal as a method Whop processes, available globally, in 19 currencies, for one-time payments and recurring subscriptions, at 3.49% + $0.49 per payment. Whop's docs say these methods need "no additional setup".

There is a separate PayPal payout option for sellers who want their earnings sent to PayPal, and that one does need a linked PayPal account. Whether every seller can switch on PayPal at checkout without linking an account is not something we could fully confirm from Whop's docs. The OneClick team wrote up exactly what is and is not confirmed in How to accept PayPal on Whop without a PayPal account.

The part most guides skip: your customer list

When you move off PayPal, your buyers' payment details do not come with you. PayPal billing agreements stay with PayPal. What you can keep is your relationship with the buyer, and that is mostly email.

  1. Export your buyers. PayPal lets you download activity reports from your account. Pull names, emails and what each person bought.
  2. Separate customers from subscribers. Someone who bought once has a customer relationship with you. Only people who opted in should get marketing email. Keep the two groups apart when you import.
  3. Tag by source. "Came from PayPal" lets you measure how many old buyers come back on the new checkout.

Moving PayPal subscribers

Recurring PayPal subscriptions do not migrate automatically. Whop Migrations, launched in June 2026, moves card subscriptions from Stripe only, per Whop's announcement. For PayPal subscribers, the practical route is:

  1. Create a Whop plan at the same price.
  2. Email each subscriber a link to join it, ideally with a free trial that ends on their next PayPal billing date so they are not charged twice.
  3. Once they join, cancel their PayPal subscription at the end of the period.

The emails that make the switch work

Before: "We are moving checkout to Whop on [date]. You can still pay with PayPal there if you prefer. Here is your link." Short, with one button.

Reminder, 3 days later: only to people who have not clicked. Mention the date their current PayPal subscription ends.

Welcome on the new side: once someone joins on Whop, send a normal welcome email, not a migration email. Our 7-day welcome sequence works here.

Failed payment: when a renewal fails on Whop, Whop marks it Past due, emails the buyer and retries over five days before canceling, according to its docs. Add your own short note with a link to update payment. See Whop failed payments and cancellations.

Which way to go

  • You only need a lower card fee: Stripe or Whop both undercut PayPal's 3.49% on cards.
  • You sell digital products or memberships and want buyers to keep PayPal: Whop gives you both in one checkout.
  • You sell physical goods on Shopify: read leaving Shopify Payments first.
