Whop Failed Payments and Cancellations: What Happens and How to Recover Revenue

What Whop does when a subscription payment fails, how the five-day retry works, and the emails that recover more of those members.

Some of your churn is not people deciding to leave. It is expired cards, insufficient funds and bank declines. That kind of churn is the easiest to win back, as long as you act during the few days when the membership is still recoverable.

Here is exactly what Whop does when a payment fails, what you control, and how to add your own recovery emails on top.

What Whop does after a failed payment

According to Whop's docs, when a subscription payment is declined:

  1. The membership becomes Past due. It needs attention but is not cancelled yet. You can filter for it under Dashboard > Payments > Status > Past due.
  2. Whop emails the customer asking them to update their payment details.
  3. Whop retries the charge automatically over a five-day period.
  4. Access may pause, depending on your Access while past due setting under Dashboard > Settings > Checkout.
  5. Whop cancels the subscription if the payment still fails after five days.

So you have roughly five days. After that you are no longer recovering a payment, you are winning back a customer, which is much harder.

What you can do as the seller

  • Ask the member to update their card. They go to their Whop membership settings, choose the membership and select Update payment method.
  • Retry the payment yourself. Under Dashboard > Payments, filter by Failed, open the payment and select Retry payment. When it succeeds, Whop restores access automatically.
  • Push back the renewal date by adding free days, if a member asks for a few more days to sort out their card.
  • Decide on access while past due. Keeping access on reduces friction for honest members. Turning it off adds urgency. Test both.

Why your own emails help

Whop's notice is a system email. Members get system emails from many places, and many ignore them. A short note from you, the person they joined for, usually gets more attention. A good recovery sequence across the five days looks like this:

Day 0, within an hour: "Your payment did not go through." Plain, friendly, one button to update the card. No guilt.

Day 2: Remind them what they keep by fixing it: the next call, the new module, their spot in the group.

Day 4: Last notice before Whop cancels. Say clearly when access ends.

Keep the subject lines plain. "Your card was declined" beats anything clever.

Cancellations are a different problem

When a member cancels on purpose, Whop stops renewal and they keep access until the end of the period they paid for. That window matters:

  • Ask one question: why are you leaving? Replies teach you more than any dashboard.
  • Offer a pause if the reason is money or time. Whop lets sellers pause payments on a membership, which keeps the relationship alive.
  • Do not beg. One honest email, then let them go.

After access ends, a win-back email flow can bring some back. Whop promo codes can be restricted to churned users only, which is useful for a "come back" offer.

Automating it with WhopMail

Doing this by hand means checking the Payments tab every day. WhopMail listens to Whop events, so a failed payment can start the recovery sequence on its own, and when the member pays, the sequence stops. Cancellations, renewals and new members can each start their own flows. Members can also keep or pause their membership straight from the email.

If you would rather build it yourself, Whop sends payment.failed and payment.succeeded webhooks. Our guide to the Whop API for email automation shows the structure.

Track the right numbers

  • Recovery rate: failed payments that later succeeded, divided by all failed payments.
  • Involuntary churn: cancellations caused by payment failure, not choice.
  • Time to recovery: if most recoveries happen on day 0, your first email is doing the work.
