"Whop API" is one of the fastest rising Whop searches this year, and email is one of the most common reasons people go looking for it. You want to send an email when someone joins, pays or fails a payment, and your current email tool does not know anything about Whop.
This guide explains how the pieces fit, what to watch out for, and when it is simpler not to build it.
The two parts: API and webhooks
- The REST API (
https://api.whop.com/api/v1) lets you read and change data on request. For email, the useful part is listing members (GET /members), which can be filtered by product, plan and status. Reading member emails needs themember:email:readpermission. - Webhooks push events to your server when something happens. This is what makes automation real time. You do not poll Whop, it tells you.
A typical email automation uses the API once to backfill existing members, then webhooks to stay current.
Events worth listening to
Whop's webhook docs list events including:
membership.activated: someone gained access. Start the welcome flow.membership.updated: a membership changed. Check the status to spot cancellations.membership.trial_ending_soon: send a reminder before a trial converts.payment.succeeded: send a receipt or thank-you and stop any recovery emails.payment.failed: start a failed payment flow.payment.requires_action: the bank wants the buyer to verify an off-session charge. The event includes adata.recovery_urlyou can send them so they can complete 3D Secure.refund.created: pause marketing to that person and log the reason.
Check the current list in Whop's docs before you build, because events are added over time.

Verify every webhook
Whop webhooks follow the Standard Webhooks spec. Each request carries signature headers, and you should verify them with your webhook secret before trusting the body. Without verification, anyone who finds your endpoint can trigger emails.
Other things to handle:
- Duplicates. Store the event id and ignore repeats.
- Order. Events can arrive out of order. Read the current state from the API when it matters.
- Fast responses. Return a 2xx quickly and do the slow work, like sending email, in a background job.
A minimal design
- A webhook endpoint that verifies the signature and saves the event.
- A worker that maps events to actions: add contact, tag them, start or stop a sequence.
- An email provider to send, with your domain authenticated.
- A nightly job that compares your list against
GET /membersto fix anything missed.
That is a few days of work to build and an ongoing job to maintain.
When to build it yourself
Build it if you already run your own backend, need data in your own warehouse, or have unusual logic. The Whop API also offers an async export endpoint (POST /exports, in beta) for bulk pulls.
When not to
If what you want is "email members when Whop events happen", a tool that already does it saves the work. WhopMail connects to Whop, syncs members and listens to more than 20 events, including new members, payments, failed payments, cancellations and renewals. Flows stop automatically when a member pays. If you like working with code or agents, WhopMail also has an MCP server so tools like Claude and Cursor can create campaigns for you. See MCP email marketing.
